College Football/Walk-On
Expert: Thom Brooks - 5/20/2008
QuestionSir,
I'm a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and I'm getting out soon and I want to Walk-On at the College Level. I'd love to Walk-On and play at the University of Wisconsin in my home state or a smaller level. I love football and just want to play the game again. I couldn't pursue it too much besides HS Ball because I was 6'4 and only 160 Pounds but I was Scout Team Player of the Year at D.C. Everest a great D-1 HS Football program. However I joined the Army and after my second deployment to Iraq, I gained some weight, strength, but lost some speed. I'm currently 6'4 200LBS and trying to get up to 225 by next spring. I played WR in HS and also Semi-Pro in WI and Texas for no money though. Would I be eligable to play College Ball and what position should I go for, since my speed with running a 4'6 40 Yard dash is a little slow? Also, The State pays for my Education since I was prior Military, I would not need a Scholarship ever and would not have any financial issue and I have already completed 40 College Credits. With all that being said, Do you think I could play at the D-1 Level or should try for a smaller level since I am 25 years old and if so what should I do? Thank you very much for your help and advice
AnswerSergeant, thanks for every single day you have worn the uniform of the greatest Military in the World's History!
You have stayed in shape, thanks to Uncle Sam. If you try out for a Div-1 School like the Badgers, your biggest obstacle will be that you are going to be 26-28 and competing against the youngsters fresh out of high school that have not lost a step yet...........
It appears you are a gamer and your military Leadership would be huge on a football field, so you need to give it your best shot to make the Wisconsin squad. They would surely weigh your Pros and Cons. I'd put you on the team. Your speed is good. You have the experience but need to get into football shape not just PT. If they do not want your services, you can certainly make the Div 1-AA or Division III teams. Somebody out there would be thrilled with your team play.
You could consider starting at the lower division and then transferring up to Wisconsin after you show them you are most capable. Your playing for a Semi Pro team would have to be specifically addressed by the NCAA. You should be eligible if you didn't play for money.
I cannot address your best position but the Coaches and Scouts will place you where you help their team the best.
Take care, You're already on the Best Team in the World,
