College Football/Ways to not be redshirt

Question
QUESTION: hey coach I've recently signed up for a Division 2 football team. I was wondering what are some ways to not be a redshirt. By the way I run a 4.9 bench 350 squat 445 and deadlift 405 are these numbers good enough for a college LB/Fullback I'm 5'10 235.

ANSWER: Dave, hello!  Your numbers and time are great so with that kind of strength I don't see a reason why you should be redshirted unless the team has quality players at your positions.  With your lower center of gravity and 235 you should be a bowling ball through the line, especially on goal line plays.  I assume you do not have a physical reason why you would me a (medical) redshirt.  Let me know how you end up with the team!

QUESTION: THanks Thom, I was also wondering if i'm able to get my numbers up to 380 bench, 500 squat, 450 deadlift, and a 4.6 40 would it be good enough to start. My doc told me ill prly grow another inch or two over the summer. So at 5'11-6 235 with those numbers would that make me a true impact as a freshman since the strongest kid on the team only does 400 bench n 675 squat. Thanks

Answer
Dave, you are at the stage where your playing position should be considered.  If you're too bulked up, you may lose speed.  If you can increase your 40 and strength well then, you sound like a starter!  It's obviously difficult to talk without seeing your movements, but the coaches and scouts will know where your best success could be.  Your increasing strength could get you to a different position where you could serve the team.

Take care,
