Question
Hi! My names Joe.  I'm a sophmore, about 6'1", 180.  I have a crazy passion for sports, and I love football!  I'm physical, dedicated, and pretty tough.  My problem is I don't have much experience in football.  I know the game well, and I love it.  I've played flag and touch, but thats about it.  I'm very athletic; I have 5 Varsity letters already, 2 Cross-Country, 2 Track, and 1 Basketball.  I'm pretty fast, and strong, and coodinated.  I'm interested in walking on to a D-3 college football team.  Do you think I can do it? and what kind of things should I work on?  also, without much football experience, what position do you think would best suit me, if I worked on speed and strength and agility? Thanks so much,
-Joe

Answer
Joe, hello!  With your size and apparent speed, you sound suitable for WR or DB.   With 5 Varsity Letters, you've earned the durability label, but at any level of football, without experience, you will be competing for a job against men that have played four or more years.

So!  If you're athletic, you would have a chance but with the disadvantage in not knowing the plays and the skills, you will need to be a quick learner and and a great Leader.  If the Coach evaluates a player, he is looking for many qualities.  You need to ask the Coach what they want for the team.  If you cannot meet the expectations as a starter, perhaps you could earn a spot on the Special Teams until you gain the advantage.

Take care,
