Question
QUESTION: My name is joe I was wondering would it be possible for me to earn a scholarship to a D1 school if I walked on. I have been playing football since I was 9 years old. I have always been a starter for the team I was playing for but my high school head coach didn't go to bat for me when it was time. The school that I am attending is TSU and I am walking on to their program. I was just wondering is it possible to earn a scholarship because money is tight and I am living off loans and grants but I need a scholarship.

ANSWER: Joe, hello!

If you are a quality ball player, the college would likely offer you a full or partial scholarship.  You need to contact the school and their Athletic Department's secretary can get you a better answer.

QUESTION: Thank you for that but what exactly do you mean by a quality ball player?

ANSWER: Joe, a quality ball player, as determined by Coaches, is one that has as many skills as possible.  You need the physical skills, but also Durability, Dependability, knowledge of the plays and rules, Drive,  Motivation and Leadership.  If you possess those qualities, a Coach will find a way to have you on that team.  If you are deficient in areas, you have to convince the Coaches that you more than compensate in the other areas.

QUESTION: But how long do you think that would take?

Answer
Joe, the time will be up to you and your motivation.  You need to get started on it this week. I cannot answer questions in general until you get specific with the college.  They will give you the details of what you've inquired about.

If you get the ball rolling, you can be playing next year with the team of choice.  If you wait, you will be two years away from joining the team, unless you sit out this year.
