College Football/Football Walk on Possibility
Expert: Thom Brooks - 8/23/2008
QuestionI am a senior in High school and have played football for 3 seasons. I was the starting quarterback on our JV team my freshman and sophomore year and played backup on our high school team my junior year. My coaches thought I was good but chose to start the other guy leaving me with limited playing time. Lots of people thought I had great possibilities with the coaching. I decided to concentrate on basketball this senior year, but would very much like to try and walk on at a university this coming year after I graduate high school. I have good footwork and understand the game and pick it up quickly. I am 6'-3" tall and run a 4.6 40. I am strong for my size but do need to put on additional pounds. I really need to know my chances and how do I go about trying to walk on. My grades are 3.6 GPA and I will be university eligible.
AnswerStephen, hello!
You sound like a perfect Quarterback that missed one season! When you decide your educational path, hopefully that will also be the college where you seek to play. Make contact with the secretary of the athletic department if the coaches and scouts are not allowed to meet with you. When you get the dates of tryouts, be certain you have any past stats and film of your 3 years.
If you have the skill and durability, many teams will not penalize you for not having played your final season. Florida State had a Heisman QB that did not start playing until the 11th grade! Your chances will depend on what kind of Leadership you show the staff when you're under game fire, and what kind of player you're competing with for that position.
You certainly sound talented enough with the Brains department, so you will make some team proud!!
Review the following sits. The first one is my son's band.......
Take care,
