College Football/Might not be able to play on senior year
Expert: Thom Brooks - 8/16/2008
QuestionDear Thom, my son is 17 and a senior this year (Weston FL). He has been playing football, since he was 8 years old. He has had bad luck in high school and has not been able to get playing time due to a couple of injuries. Although he has been practicing with the team for the past two years he might not be able play this year due to a dislocated shoulder injury during a spring game a few months ago (you can see some of the high lights on this link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJZFTFQ0cqA ).
He will not stop going to practice even if he cannot participate.
His dream is to play college football and is open to play almost at any level.
What do you suggest him to do this year and next year?
Thank you in advance
AnswerRamon, hello!
The first step is to get him healthy enough. The colleges will put him down on the Depth Chart as questionable, untl he can prove his durability. At the same time, if he has the power, skill and knowledge, he can overcome his lack of experience at the high school and college level. If I were his Coach, I would want him to see how he competes with the competition for his position. If the Doctors clera him to play, I would want to have him attend any tryouts.
I cannot answer how long he should sit out before making an attempt to join a team. His educational studies and rehabilitation will determine that.
He should be in contact with those that can get him into a training schedule. He should contact the college of his choice, start working out with players, getting advice from many Coaches, contact the local high school football association (the officials have a lot of knowledge to share) and the local TV and radio talk show sports people.
He needs to keep working on his goal. Many of the JUCO, Division III, Division II, and Division 1-AA schools will be happy to have him on their team if he's dependable, durable and can help their program.
Take care,
Thom Brooks
