Question
my son was told if he gets  red shirted his freshman year due to his grades from high school which is just a possibility he would need to stay at his current college for 2 years.if he decides to transfer next year do you think he should allow to his self to be red shirted or just sit out this season? will he be able to transfer and still have 4 years of  eligibility.

Answer
Hello, William !

On something this important you need to contact NCAA.com and their rules.

What they likely meant is that if he is redshirted one year and then transfers, he has to sit out the year (which means two years).  So, you need to consider if he loses a scholarship or should leave the team and transfer now.  If he is redshirted, he can still play 4 years if he didn't take the field in the redshirt year.  If depends on when he enrolled in school and joined the team.  The new college will give him the official decision on his eligibility.

Now is the time to get it verified.  Don't want a year and then face disappointment.

Take care,
