QuestionQUESTION: My friend went to University of Dayton and was red shirted his freshman year and then played another year before transferring to Notre Dame to try to walk on. Does he have to sit out and year and if so can he try out or have any contact with the team before the next season? He told me he already made the team but from my experience as a college baseball player I thought you had to sit out a year before you could even try out for the team.
ANSWER: Ben, hello!
I do not know of a variation in the rule. He is supposed to sit out for one year when transferring up a division but the red shirt year may have been a waiver for him. The NCAA will make the official decision but I would be surprised if he played without a one year break.

QUESTION: I have one more question. What exactly does sitting out mean? Would he be allowed to practice or have contact with the team?
AnswerBen, He would be able to enroll in school but not be able to play in a contest with the team. He could work out with them. His school will advise if he is redshirted or gray shirted (where he's enrolled in the fall but not at practices until the following year). They will tell him what the NCAA guidelines are.
Take care,
