College Football/Walking on a college football team
Expert: Thom Brooks - 9/30/2008
QuestionHey guys, my name is Graham and I played Basketball in High school, but I injured my knee my junior and was told I would never run again and play sports(I tell people I made the impossible possible). My senior year my coach didn't play me more than a 2 minutes a game because he thought I was "damaged goods". Even though at the end of the season I was the 6th highest scorer on the team and 42/61 from the three point line. I love the defense and the phyiscal part of it. My high school coach made me not like basketball as much after my senior year and I wished I had played football in high school. I miss athletics and wanted to try to walk-on the football team at either Tarleton State or Texas State. I know I will have a better chance of making the team at a Div-2 than a Div-1aa, but I just want to play and ill whatever it takes to play. Positions I am seeking are WR, Safety or OLB if I gain some weight. I am 18 years old and 6'1 192lbs and right now my bench is 240lbs,squat is 415lbs and 40yd dash is 4.8. I have till next semester or next fall depending on when I choose to transfer. Right now my workout plan is full body workout 3 days a week and sprints/speed/agility training every other day. How do you think my chances are?
AnswerGraham, hello!
Your heart appears to be in great shape so your chances are better than average. If your knee was repaired properly and you do not have a lot of continuing problems (like constant swelling), then it is probably stronger than before.
Your physical abilities show that you can be a good football player but without experience, many of the colleges will consider the man with 4 years of game time knowledge over you.
So, you have to make up any deficiency by impressing them with your own skill, Leadership and unselfishness. If you can do that, you will make the team of choice.
Take care,
Thom Brooks
