College Football/Being a walk-on place kicker

Question
Hello, I am currently going to Michigan State and I want to play football here.  Now I have never played football before, but I have watched a lot of it so I know all the rules and positions.  I have played soccer for 14 years and I was All-State as a Junior and Senior in HS and I want to tryout as a place kicker.  My question is this, how do I go about this with a D1 team?  I know that the season has already started so I will likely wait till next year, and I have already emailed the coaching staff but I have not gotten a response. I did a litte practicing at I could hit 40 yard field goals with no tee pretty consistently, and thats with almost no football kicking practice. I am good enough to even think about this? I have the determination and dedication to work for it. Thanks if you can help!
Cheers

Answer
Chess, hello!

With your 14 years of experience in kicking balls around, I am certain the Spartans will take a look at your distance, accuracy and team spirit, unless they've got great kickers presently.

They will talk to you about their tryouts for next season and give you advice about how you can legally attend workouts when they start up again.

Talk to the current players.  The snappers, holders and kickers may allow you into their circle.  Talk to the secretary in the athletic department (the coach's secretary) and they will give you the NCAA rules, dates, and available time when the coaches can talk with you.

Pursue the dream.
