College Football/What all do I need to do to walk on somewhere?

Question
Hi there, I am considering walking on to the USF football team next year and want to know if I have a shot at making it. I'm a pretty tall guy and I had significant playing time as a free safety my senior year, but I only weigh about 165 lbs on my 6 foot 4 frame. I run about a 4.75 40, and can only bench about 185 lbs. My grades are decent and I have a high ACT score, so I'm not worried about eligibility, but if I gain some weight and work my tail off through the end of this year would I have a chance or will I be wasting my time? And do I need my current coach to do anything to help me out?

Thanks for the time,
Jack

Answer
Jack, Happy New Year!

Yes, you have a great chance and yes, you need to enlist the help of your current coaches, players, media and local football officials.  All of them have knowledge and contacts to share.

Your weight will likely improve with the proper diet and physical workouts.  Stay away from the enhancement drugs but high protein meals can improve your strength and size.

I've attached the websites for you to explore.  They have a lot of information that will be helpful.  You need to study the rules of football.  It could give you a decided advantage if during the tryouts, you show Leadership and football knowledge against the guy you're competing against.

Take care,

Thom Brooks
