College Football/Walking on D2
Expert: Thom Brooks - 10/11/2009
QuestionQUESTION: I'm currently a freshman at a D1 school but next semester I will be transfering to a D2 school so I can play football. As I played in high school I never had much of a choice what position I wanted to play, so i got stuck with offensive lineman and defensive end, I did start. But now I want to walk on as a QB. I dont mind being redshirted to learn the plays. I'm 6'0 190. Would this be a good choice?
ANSWER: Chuck, hello
You can move down to Division II and not have to sit out a year. You do not need to sit out a redshirt year unless the school wants you to do so. If you're trying to learn the art of being a Quarterback, many colleges would need to see that you are qualified. You will be competing against men that have been playing that position so you would be disadvantaged. If you are an athlete, they will get you placed where you can help the team best, and hopefully, it will be where you will excel.

QUESTION: When I go to walk on would I say I'm trying out as an athlete, or Quarterback where I want to play, and they will place me where they think I should go?
AnswerTell them where your experience is but tell them you want to Quarterback. If they're smart, they will give you the opportunity to see if you can excel at the position. Always tell them the absolute facts and let them sort out what they want, need and expect. If they're aware that you have talent but no experience at QB, they are very likely to make plans around your strength and weaknesses.
