Question Can a player on the receiving team call for a fair catch on an onside kick?
Answer Marvin, hello!
Yes, if it has not yet hit the ground. It's a penalty if the K team catches it in the air before hitting the ground. It's a beanbag at the spot if the ball does not go 10 yards and the ball is dead or if First Touching by the K team, The K team cannot advance the ball, but the R team can advance (if they didn't call a valid or invalid fair catch).
I listen to Officials who have been calling plays for 15-20 and 30 years. It is amazing how they have to gather their thoughts to make a correct call. It's an intriguing gmae that all of us continue to learn at each game.
Take Care,
