Question
hi,
there was a presumed fumble by purdue when ohio state jarred the ball lose..the whistle had not yet blown, however it was ruled that forward progress had been stopped. i thought the play only stops with the whistle. was this a bad call? please clarify. thank you

Answer
Jim, hello!

Many players are trained to play until you hear the whistle, but the Officials actuallly determine the ball is dead at Forward Progress, BEFORE the whistle blows.  It could have been a bad call but I would think it would have been a perfect call if Forward Progress was marked before the ball came out.

Take care,
