College Football/Fighting Illini - The "Chief" and Florida St. Indian mascot
Expert: Thom Brooks - 11/28/2009
QuestionWhy did the NCAA induce sanctions against the University of Illinois for having the Chief, forcing them to quit using him as a mascot (or else) because it was "exploitation" and yet they still allow Florida St. to continue using their American Indian war mascot who rides a horse and carries a war spear? Isn't that prejudicial and unfair to impose a rule on one team and not on the other? If Illinois can't have an American Indian mascot, then shouldn't any other team with such also receive the same treatment and sanctions by the NCAA ?

You've hit a nerve for me. I would think the Seminoles have stronger representation from the lawyers and fan base. It's ridiculous for Illinois to have changed anything that was of historical significance. I am Cherokee and would be proud of any team using that name. I'm a Seminole, and Atlanta Braves fan. PETA just put out an insane demand last week that the U. of Georgia should no longer be allowed to use a live Bulldog as the mascot, but should be required to use a mechanical dog. They claim it is because of the Inbreeding as to why the UGA #7 died only 5 years old. Dogs die every day. Those same people are trying to get Black cars outlawed in California and make it illegal to have anything but a white roof and white roads.........Those same people are in Politics, running the country the past 4 years. I'm very firm that everyone should have Equal Rights, but the majority rules. You need to write to those that run the school and allow that President to explain why he agrees with those "sanctions" that were permitted.
I would be writing complaints to everyone if they try to change names. It's not derogatory. I see the Chief as a sign of History, Strength and great Moral Leadership.
Anyone who agrees with this garbage should be taken out back and beaten by the Cowboys, Indians, Braves, Redskins, Fightin' Illini, the citizens of Sioux City, the Rebels, the Yankess, the Sooners, the Warriors, the Redmen, the Mountaineers, the Pirates, the Red Devils, the Blue Devils, (Southern Cal was formerly called the Fighting Methodists), the Saints, the Buccaneers, the Vikings, the Packers, the 49ers, the Tar Heels, Demon Deacons, the Volunteers, the Fightin' Irish, and I could continue.......Those same jerks are arguing against every team name I've mentioned. Now, they're even working on trying to get rid of the animal team names......
What's next? Ban all sports? Call the teams Red, White and Blue or would that be showing too much spirit and loyalty to the flag. Your email will have me talking to my insurance classes for the next year about the foolishness and folly of those who think team names need to be tampered with. I might agree if some team used a name like "Child Molesters" or Rapists" but it's all in fun. Some people live to destroy the happiness of others. I bet they're Agnostics or Atheists. So, who are you going to listen to? Which are you? Who do you agree with? If you support name changes, then I would gladly meet you in a public forum to debate.
I coach a men's baseball team called the Savannah Bombers. We've won our league championship 4 of the past 5 years. The opposition could say the Bombers name was sinister, ruthless, and mean. But, the logo we wear is that of a B-24 Bomber. Actor Jimmy Stewart flew 20 missions in Germany during W.W.II with it. The players also wear an American flag on our sleeve. I purchased old combat patches that match their jersey number, so we wear the patch of the 24th Infantry, 3rd Army, 8th Air Force, and all other patches that honor the U.S.
military. So, my idea is to honor the Patriots. We have many Honorary members that have served. If that offends someone, then they can kiss my American loving cleats.
The point is, some minority is always trying to convince the majority how the majority is doing something terrible to hurt the minority. It's madness. It is a disease. It needs to stop.
The NCAA will cow-tow to whoever's voice is the loudest. The ACLU can kiss my Not Politically Correct butt.
It's the same moronic people that are also trying to get Religion banished and continues to assault those who still think it's okay to say Merry Christmas.
So,
Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah.
May God Bless America.
May God Bless our Troops.
May God Bless everything that irrates people who do not want to use the word, "GOD".
I hope you get my meaningful intentions. I am going to put up my "Holiday" lights this week and will dare anyone to try to take them down.
