College Football/NCAA football fake field goal

Question
Please explain the rules as for the holders knee being down on a fake field goal in college football. I've never heard this addressed and I've not been able to get an answer on this.

Answer
Rick, hello!

In the event of an errant ball, the holder can rise and immediately drop back down to hold for the kick.
If he takes steps and then drops, the ball is dead.  He is supposed to have both knees off the ground in order to lateral back to a runner in a deceptive play.  Otherwise, the ball would be blown dead.
