Question
Good evening sir,
I'm 24 yrs old and i going into my freshman year at a jc in California. I was speaking with one of my coaches today and he asked me what position i play and i told him that i play corner. He looked me up and down and told me that he wanted to make me a safety/outside linebacker...he implied that i was big for a corner. I'm 6'0, and i weigh 190lbs...with a 4.34 hand time 40...do you think it would be healthy or wise for me to put on the 20lbs or so that he is suggesting? i'm slightly afraid of losing my speed being that heavy and i've never been more than 196lbs...any advice would help...i just want to succeed.

Answer
Brad, Happy Thanksgiving!

It is tough to answer the question.  The increase in weight could cause a number of negative things to occur to your speed/body and overall play.  It would depend on how you went about gaining the weight and the kind of physical training you're doing while gaining the weight.  At your age, if you bulk up in a hurry, it is sure to slow you down.  The question is, would you be stronger?  Would the new position cost you skill from the experience of a DB now?  I don't know that 190 is huge for a DB.  Dion Sannders played pretty darn good and was bigger than you.  So, it goes back to your ability.  If you're a good athlete, you will find a way to be successful.  Whatever you lack on the physical side, remember that your knowledge of the game and LEADERSHIP is what separates the average and elevates you into the best player on the field.

Take the position but don't be over concerned about adding 20 pounds.  It will come natural if you exercise and eat a healthy diet.  Stay away from the enhancement techniques that could hurt you later.

I wish you great success in the future!!!
