Question
QUESTION: I am currently in my 2nd full time year at a community college in Virginia. I played football in High school. I'm 6'3 225. I want to play OLB, MLB, or TE in college. I run a 40 in 4.8, shuttle in 4.5, bench 260, squat 365, and hang clean 265. I'm wondering if JUCO teams have tryouts? Also since I'm 2 years out of highschool, do I only have 2 years of eligibility left for Division 1? Or still all of them since I have not participated in any sports. And if I go to a JUCO to play, is there better places to go in order to get to the Division 1 ranks of college football? ( i don't care where in D1, it could be from Memphis or a team like USC or Michigan, I don't care as long as it's Division 1.) if I go to a school that has tryouts, what kind of tryout should  I expect as far as what is involved with one?

Thank you,

Tyler

ANSWER: Tyler, hello and Merry Christmas!

You would have tryouts for the team but would have 5 years of eligibility remaining.  If you move up in divisions, you have to sit out for one year.  The school will advise if any of your requirements has been used up.

Contact the school for their schedule.  Their tryouts will be more difficult than you've dreamed, but if you're skilled, you will qualify.  They will have someone grade your position.   You mentioned several so you need to target the one the school needs most, and/or where you have the best chance to make the team.

QUESTION: Thanks for your answer! Do any schools let you tryout for more than 1 position? And also, how can I get coaches to know who I am before a tryout?( like get invited to a spring day or something?)

Answer
Tyler, hello!

Yes, you can tryout for different positions but that could weaken you for both.  Advise them that you are capable of two, and they will evaluate where you best help the team.

The coaches and scouts will look over the candidates prior to workouts.  You can contact them at their athletic department if you know the school you will be playing for.

Contact all of the coaches, players and media from your area to enlist their help.  Someone around you has the contacts.
