Expert: Thom Brooks - 12/3/2009
Questioni am trying out for university of Akron football team either in february or august. i am a freshman now. i didnt get the chance to play in high school because of personal reasons. i am 5 foot 10 or 5 foot 11 and 250 pounds. mostly fat. i know i need more muscle but is it possible for me to make the team as a DE? i really want to play and my goal is to be the third player ever to go to NFL from akron. but rikght now i am focused on college football. i also need to know what should i expect to do at tryouts.
thank you so much
AnswerNick, hello!
I thought I had written you yesterday so this may be a repeat.
You do not have the best chance to make the team if you're competing against the men that have played 4 years and have the experience. With that being said, you need to get with trainers to get into shape to make a good showing at the tryouts. You need to learn the rules, the plays, the mental side of the game.
Today's DE's are typically taller than you but if you have the athlete ability, the team will look at what you bring to the field.
The biggest thing is what is your Leadership and Spirit all about? Can you handle pain? Can you inspire those around you to Cowboy Up when they get challenged in a stressful moment?
Merry Christmas to you and yours!!
