College Football/Jerseys

Question
I understand that in the NFL and college levels players are
required to wear jersey numbers that relate to their
positions.  Why exactly was this rule set in place?  What
started this rule? Thank you!

Answer
Cortni, hello!

The rules have evolved over the years but back in the 30's and 40's, they were still wearing leather helmets and the numbers didn't start until along about then.  I have read the history of the jersey numbers which is attached but the numbering system started in the late '50's and 60's.

Jim Otto of the Oakland Raiders wore 00 but had to get the NFL office to approve it.  The standard numbering is 50-79 for the O-Line so the Officials (and opposing team) can recognize if anyone is illegally on the line, or lining up as a TE or WR.
