College Football/Tailback
Expert: Thom Brooks - 2/7/2009
QuestionDear Thom,
Is there any difference between a player labeled as a tailback on a NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision team's depth chart and a player labeled as a running back on a NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision team's depth chart?
Yours truly,
Michael
AnswerMichael, hello!
I do not know, but for decades the words have interchanged. Back in the '40's they called all of them wingbacks and tailbacks before they started using the work Quarterback. I would think the old word Wingback was the Wing T and the word Running back is commonly used to include all in the backfield, including the QB, the FB and the Halfback...........
If I find a better answer, I'll write back to you!
Have a great day!
