Question
I am 6 foot 240lbs and run the 40 in 4.35. I really would like to try to walk on to the University of Alabama. I have never played other than 8th grade if that counts. but i have been in the Marine Corp for 5 years and really would like to see if i can accomplish this goal. Do you think that I have a chance

Answer
Craig, hello!

I can't speak for your skills but your size indicates that you could compete.  The fact that you will always be a U.S. Marine will compensate for your lack of playiing experience.  I do not you position.  Your height would be a bit lower than most of the OL guys but it doesn't exclude you from being a competitor.  Do you want to be a FB, OL, DL ?

The down side is that you will be competing for a position against younger fellas that have been playing that piece of ground for 4-8 years longer than you.  They will be seasoned.  You will be their Red Meat.  So, how fast can you learn?

The Coaches will also grade you on Leadership.  If you show promise, they will expect your training to give advantages to the team.... If you cannot lead, you will not be playing, unless you are an outstanding athlete.

I like the Georgia Bulldogs and Florids State Seminoles.  I will pull for you if the Crimson Tide accept you, though!

You're looking at one of the best programs in America.  Remember, you may want to scout out the lesser division schools to play for one year, then sit out a year, and move up later.  You would quickly learn the level of competition.

Take care,

Thom Brooks
