College Football/Walk-ons
Expert: Thom Brooks - 3/1/2009
QuestionHey Thom!
I am interested in trying out for a DI football team this year. I have 2 years
high school football experience one at WR/QB flex position and another at
purley QB. However I have no actual playing experince because playing
football at our school like many others is just political (who the coaches have
known the longest/whose parents they know/whose dad is a coach etc.).
Many people thought that I had the talent and ability to be a special player
but was just never given a chance. I have the strongest arm in my school
football wise, pretty good accuracy, and I understand the position at a
completly different level which is a partly result of my coaches and I thank
them for that. My flaws are in my footwork and my height, I am working really
hard on my drops to get them in tip-top shape. I am 5'11'' but not much I can
do except hope I grow more. I hung up the towel before my junior year but
have not hung up football. Since then I have continued weight training and
practicing throwing drills. So first of all what do I have to get an oppurotunity
to try-out for a team? And what time of year do these take place?
AnswerKevin, hello!
You need to contact the schools immediately if you want to play in the Fall. Your size would not be the prototype QB that Div I looks for, but Doug Flutie was short and didn't buy into that. If you have the skill, knowledge of the rules, and Leadership, then the mechanics of footwork can be corrected with a month's practice. All skills have to be worked on. No one is football ready without perfect practice. Get your healthy diet going. Get on a strenous workout schedule. Get players to work out with you. Write down your dadgum goals. Keep a ledger of your activities. Make a written plan to be on a team, first string or otherwise. Talk to all of the local football people in your community (YMCA, high school coaches, football officials, news media sports reporters).
Knowledge is Power. Go get some everyday!
