Question Hi, I have just graduated from high school, and im planning on going to a D-
1 university in the fall. The school isn't really known for their sports. I was
never really interested in playing football until somewhere through my junior
year, but at that point i just told myself it was too late. But i really regret not
going for it back then, but i was just wondering the process of walk-ons, and
how realistic would it be too become part of the team. Id be willing to playing
any position, even part of the practice squad. I am 6'1 230 lbs, I'm pretty
fast, especially for my size. I would think the best position would be LB. I am
very hard working, and i would put in the time, attend all practices and what
not.
I know that i need to contact one of the coaches over there, but i didn't know
if you could shed some light on the whole process of walk ons. Also if you
knew if it was too late for the 2009 year to tryout, or if it varies from place to
place. Thanks.
Answer Robert, hello! Congratulations on entering college. I hope you make the team!
I have attached the NCAA eligibility rules. You do need to make contact with the school's athletic department. They will tell you the dates for tryouts and interviews.
I remember the QB for Florida State that didn't play ball until the 11th grade and turned out to be a Heisman and pro QB, plus he was older than everyone else on the team...... Forgot his name.......
If you do not have experience, the other fellows will have an advantage. So, your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to get to the camp, make an impression, earn a roster spot, and then show the Coaches that you can compete. It will take extra Leadership, skill, knowledge and passion, but you can be successful if you focus on the challenge.
Take care,
