Question My son recently lost his D1 football scholarship and is currently enrolled in summer classes at a community college. Should he consider transferring to another university come fall and take his chances as a walk on? What are the pros and cons to consider as a walk on? Or, should he wait it out a year and continue to increase grades at the community college and then seek scholarship opportunities next year?
Need Guidance!
Thanks,
KJ
Answer Karen
Thanks for your question. There are a few consideration, the first is why is your son going to college - to get his degree, to play football, etc. Next what was the reason he lost his scholarship? Has he left the school that gave him the scholarship and if not can he stay there and try to win the scholarship back? He needs to rectify the reason he lost his scholarship. If he tries to walk on at another college he will be considered a transfer student-athlete and there are some eligibility rules that may bar him from playing or walking on in the Fall if he doesn't follow the NCAA rules [the school's compliance officer can assist with this]. Academic are important and he should try to always improve the grade. His academic record is vital as is rectifying the problem that lead to him losing the scholarship.
