College Football - walk-on kicking

Expert: Vic Winnek - 6/4/2009

Question
I am going to attend Coastal Carolina University in fall 2009. Being the dream that i have wanted to play college football since I was 5, i never started playing til' 3 years ago. i played 2 years of varsity as their field goal kicker, but my farthest being a 35 (yeah I know thats short), i am reluctant to walk-on, i thought of waiting till my sophmore year to do so, any thoughts

Don't be affraid to walk on!  You give it a chance now and if it doesn't work out this Fall then you go out again in the Spring! This is you dream, you need to go after it!

My I suggest you start hitting the weight room and running daily to build your leg and core strength .  Also you should spend an hour each day starting now working on kicking drills.  You kicks are short but a good PAT kicker who is 100% accurate up 35 yards has value, same for kick-offs and onside kicks.  You might want to start going to kicking camps and clinics. Well worth it.
Best of luck
