Question
Hey coach,
I was wondering how I can make the team at UT Austin even if I only make
a backup quarterback. I'm 5'6 but can throw 40 yards accurately. I'm fast and a leader.
I am in good condition but what would I need to make the team with my height. I also didn't play high school football

Answer
Daniel, hello!

Your height would be more of a detriment if you are a drop back passer.  If you join a team that runs something like the Triple Option, then your strengths would be utilized.  Georgia Southern has won 6 national titles in Div-I-AA.  They are bringing back the Triple Option this year after playing .500 ball without it in the past few years.  So, it depends on what kind of offense UT-Austin will use.  If you mean the Longhorns, they like the big ol' Blue Chip superstars like Vince Young.  Their offense may not be geared for a short, scatback type QB.  But, there is a college out there that could allow you to blossom.  Not having played high school ball, you will be at a great disadvantage when you start competing against the men that have 4 years experience on you.  If you cannot make the big schools, look at Junior College or Division III, Division II schools.  If you turn out to be a quality player, you can sit out a year and move up to play at the Division I level.

Go the NCAA.com website and look at their Eligibility Rules.

Fran Tarkenton went to 4 super bowls and was considered small in stature but he would roll out.  The big guys couldn't catch him when he scrambled.  Doug Flutie played in the NFL, Canadian League and for Boston College.  He was very short but wore out the defense.  So, your size is not a great factor if you are a Leader, a Gamer and can take the pain.

Let me know which team you end up on.!!   GATA.
