Question
How many players may travel with the team to an away game?

Answer
Mike
Some conferences have a 72-man limit on travel rosters such as the ACC. The Big Ten Conference effective this year, in 2011- the travel squad will be capped at 70 players.

The Big Ten has its own travel squad limits which is listed in the Big Ten manual. Only eligible student-athletes on a schools Compliance Eligible List [CEL} may travel with the team at any time - whether to a championship game; scrimmages, exhibitions. ANY game travel is subject to the limits and rules [Big Ten Agreement 16.8]. Some restrictions to travel squad members include:

1. Non-eligible student-athletes should not travel on their own to away games - and if they do, they are "on their own" and may not interact with the team, sit with them, etc.
2. Ineligible athletes are not to be considered "managers" for the purpose of including them on travel.
3. Sports other than Football and Men's & Women's Basketball get a "one-time travel exception" where for one trip, everyone can go.
4. Only student-athletes who are eligible to compete may dress in uniform for a game or contest (this applies to home or away contests).
5. "Neutral" sites count as travel sites, so all normal limits and rules apply.
6. Anyone going on trips should be a permissible traveler!

The limit to travel squad memebers is done on a conference by conference basis the vast majority limit travel squads from 60-70 squadmembers and many limit the number of dressed home game squad members.  NCAA Admin. NCAA By-law Rule 17.11 governs the size.  D-1A Squads are imited to 105 squad size amd D-1AA is limited to 90.  As far as travel only 56 squad members can travel the D-1AA level (63 for D-III).
