College Football/the BCS or playoffs?

Question
In light of the NCAA basketball tournament, it is not hard for the BCS to come to mind.

Most people are aware of the growing dissatisfaction of fans, coaches and universities of the BCS system.

This is mainly due to the annual snubs of number 3 and in my opinion last year number 5 Oregon.

If you guys do not mind sharing your opinion on the subject I have a few questions.

Do you think the NCAA football organization and universities would benefit more from a playoff system instead of the BCS?

Since the NCAA front office is sticking with the BCS, what reasons do you think they continue to run this system?

Answer
Thanks for the question, it is a frequently asked one!  First and foremost this is my opinion and not that of the NCAA or any member conference.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way.  I  totally agree with your comments.

Your two questions:

Do you think the NCAA football organization and universities would benefit more from a playoff system instead of the BCS? ANSWER: Yes!  The fan and audiance base will still be there.  I would love to see the NCAA D-1A go to a paly-off system as in Basketball or as thy do in football for Div. 1-AA, II, III.  I'd love to see the play offs be completed by the 2nd or 3rd week in December with each round being sponsored.  Then come Dec.30 - Jan 5 allow Traditional Bowl games during that one week period.

Since the NCAA front office is sticking with the BCS, what reasons do you think they continue to run this system?  ANSWER: Two reason the first MONEY, it is all about money. Reason two is because there are multiple contract with Bowls, Conferences, the NCAA and TV.  Once the contracts expire it can be reevaluated.  One thing I have learned when dealing with educators, they are affraid to breach contracts.

So my opinion is to have a play-off starting by Thanksgiving and finishing before christmas and then have a BOWL week that is played for the sake  of tradition and college football.  One could always reserve the second Saturday in January for College super bowl, where if two teams were disputing their right to claim national championship then it could be decided in that one game after they had completed their bowl.  It would not always have to be palyed.  For logistics, make it part of the Shrine game with the shrine game being played first then the College super Bowl -  a double header. These were done in early football all the way through the 1950s
