College Football/College Football/ Walk-On

Question
I am 5'8, I weigh about 200 pounds. My 40 time is about a 4.7-4.8, I bench press 145 pounds 3 times (yes, I know I have to work on that), I squat 300 pounds 5 times. I really have the heart and mind set to play football at the college level. I have no high school experience. None what so ever because of various reasons. I want to play at the D1 level but I will settle for what can get me to play. Do you think I have a chance to compete in college football? What position do you think I would fit the description of most? I know how to play just about everything but I dont have the experience. Also what are the steps to become a walk-on? All that I know is that some college players become a walk-on but I don't know the steps to being one. Thank you for your time

Answer
Markel, hello!  Yes, you can play college football if you have the skills.  You need to contact the college of your choice.  They will counsel your requirements for entry.  You will have to talk with the Coaches to see when their Tryouts are.  They will assess your chances of making the team.  If other men have a 4 year track record to show stats, experience and skill, you will be at a great disadvantage.  If the team can use your position, they will certainly get you trained, but I cannot recommend if you should try to be on the Special Teams or as a kicker, reserve running back or somewhere on the O-Line or D-Line.

You may want to go to your local high schools, YMCA, and the city and county Recreational Leagues.  They will introduce you to the football program where you can play or assist in coaching in order to learn where your skills are best suited.  Then, a letter from those groups could perhaps get the attention of the college ( Division III, Division II, or Junior College).  If you are a great player, the Div- I teams will give you a look.

I hope you can make that dream come true.
