Question
last NIGHT OUR KICKER WENT DOWN IN PRACTICE. SO MY SON WHO WAS GOING TO RED SHIRT, AND IS NOT A KICKER, WAS ASKED TO KICK IN TONIGHT GAME. DOES HE AUTOMATICALLY LOOSE A YEAR OF ELIGIBILITY BY KICKING FOR ONE GAME IN DIDVISION II FOOTBALL

Answer
Louis
First and foremost congratulations to you and your son.  How proud you must be of your son to be called upon as a true Freshman to kick for his school.  This is a bit out of my area of expertise.  Per NCAA By-Law 14.2.3 any competition in a game is considered the start of the 5 years of eligibility. Under the former by-laws eligibility was preserved if he played in less than 15 minute or 1 quarter. I recommend your son speak with the Compliance officer at his college to verify he looses the year.  There may be an exception for Div. II and III schools. Below please find a link to the NCAA By-laws:

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, but I am an active on field official and had a game myself this weekend so I am just answering questions tonight.

Best of luck to you and your son,
