Question
Good afternoon Mr. Winnek.
I am involved with a clinic for HS football officials in Iowa. I am looking for some ideas for on-field presentations. As an example last year we did an in-depth study on the free blocking zone with the zone roped off on the field. Would you happen to have any other ideas that could be of use to us?
Thnk you.
Bra Fuller.

Hi Brad,
Thank you for your question.  Truly the best on-field presentations at clinics involve live - player on player demonstrations where players do walk-thrus, half speed and full speed demos.

The easiest on-field presentations have to do with mechanics (where to line up, where to be as a play evolves and instruct where to look and what to look for as you walk through each mechanic).  You can break into groups [Ref, Ump; HL; LJ; BJ]

Goal line Mechanics
Free Kick Mechanics
Scrimmage kick mechanics
Run play mechanics
pass play mechanics, etc.

Rule based presentations on field can be done by demonstrations of what is legal and proper techniques.  This is best done when players demonstrate.
You might want to incorporate film into your clinics as well (i.e. show a 10-15 min. pass interference film then demonstrate the different types of PI on the field as they were shown in the film).

Blocks in the back vs. Clipping
Hold vs. no Hold
OPI (what is & what isn't)
DPI (what is & what isn't)
5 yrd Face mask vs. 15 yard face mask
Unsportsmanlike acts (players love to act these out)

Another thing you can do at clinics is set up a table with legal equipment and set up another table with illegal equipment (i.e. eye shields, illegal pads, braces, uniforms, balls, etc.)  This helps with uniformity of enforcement.

Talk to several coaches in your area and you State Association and explain your clinic and ask them for assistance, such as a loan of players or coaches or equipment for demos.

If you need films contact your local college officials association or the NFL's officiating office and ask for some training films.

Hope this helps.  For a fee there are several officials around the country that I know who put on the clinic. I'm not sure of their rates.
