College Football/Practice Squad
Expert: Thom Brooks - 9/29/2007
QuestionThom,
I attend the University of Central Florida, and I was wondering about my chances at making the practice squad for the football team. I am 5 foot 10 and weigh in at about 160 pounds, which I realize is extremely small for a football player. I am currently a sophomore, and I plan on dedicating the next year to gaining muscle, speed, and agility. I did not play football in high school, but I have a vast understanding of both the offensive and the defensive side of the ball. I have 4.8 speed, and all the heart in the world. I am very tough, and willing to do anything asked of me. When I am able to get up to about 180-185 lbs, and 4.6-.47 speed, what do you think my chances of making the practice squad are, and how would I go about trying out? Thanks for your help.
Josh
AnswerJosh, hello!
If you increase weight too quickly, it could be harmful to your health so be certain that you are following medical quidelines.
If you have a tough attitude, then you need to contact the Knights coaching staff immediately. They will advise your chances and when the practices/tryouts begin.
You need to remember that Coach Lou Holtz was a smaller guy that played some tough Linebacker, so use your size as a weapon. If you can't match up with the brawn of your opponent, then you will have to overcome the adversity by being smarter, quicker and mentally tougher.
I worked nine football games last week and coached a men's baseball game yesterday. I'm looking at jocks from ages 6-60 each week in those two sports. I can pick out those that are Gamers and those that are not competitive. It's your Heart and Skills. You can improve both.
I still own a home down in Sebring, Florida and have family in Orlando. Great school!
Have a Day !!
