College Football/Walk-on Chance
Expert: Thom Brooks - 11/7/2007
QuestionI am 20 years old and I played highschool football, obviously I have been out of football for about 2 years but I am interested in playing at the college level as a walk-on. I am 6'1 235 my lifting stats are as follows. Bench press 225 reps-23 Squat 520 max and I run a 4.8 40 yard dash. What do you think my chances are of making a football team as a walk-on and what do you think I may have chances at? Div-1A or something lower?... also I played quarterback and linebacker in highschool... I have a 70 yard deep ball and i'm a fairly accurate quarterback. Based on my stats that I have given you, size and the like, what position would you recommend that I try and use for my walk-on tryout? I appreciate whatever answers you can give me

AnswerJustin, hello! If you are a smart and agile athlete, you can play about anywhere you desire. As a QB, TE, or Linebacker, your 520 Squat with 235 rolling down the lines can punish the 180 pound Safety. You sound fitted to be a Fullback, but if you're throwing a ball for 50-60 yards, many of the Div-1-A schools would love to give you a tryout.
Since I do not know your state, nor your desire for a degree, your decision should be based on how close to home and what Education you pursue. When you get up to the elite Division I schools, your competition for starting jobs on the team increases dramatically. The best players in the Nation are playing for the Florida State, Ohio State,
Southern California teams. If you are a stand out player, you will compete with all levels. If you are two years rusty, you need to get to your local coaches and let them advise the physical workouts necessary to get ready.
You need to take action today. You are not too old, but time is wasting away. 1440 minutes each day. Get busy.
I was officiating an Age 10 football playoff game last night and talked to one a man that was my son's Coach 12 years ago in high school. He said his son was very interested in attending Navy or Air Force for his education and chances to play ball. We talked about another former standout that has the ability but did not have the required discipline to push for a college roster spot.
So! How much desire and discipline do you have? The bottom line is how much trouble, time and money will it take for you to live the dream?
