College Football/Walk on tryouts

Question
QUESTION: Hello. I am a full time student at a Division 1 school in NC. I'm 6'0" and 275 lbs. I spent 6 years in the National Guard with one deployment to Afghanistan in 2003. I have never played football at any level and was interested in trying out as a walk on in January. I do play hockey in a local rec league, so the athletic ability is not as much of an issue. What are my chances of making it, at least just on the team at a D1 school? IF I decide to try out, what position(s) would be ideal to learn the game with my lack of experience? I have the drive and determination to do it, but am not an expert in actually playing the game. Thanks for your response.

ANSWER: Jason, hello!

Your size indicates you would be suited as an Offensive Lineman or perhaps a Tight End, if you have good speed and good hands.  A gentleman named Dan contacted me about his looking to recruit military personnel for football.  Contact him at www.MilitaryAthletes.org to see if you two have common ground.

Not knowing your heart and ability, it is tough to advise what level school you need to play for.  Many experienced players have the advantage over you, so you will need to convince the Coach that you have something different to help them win ballgames.

QUESTION: Wow, thanks for the quick response. I fully understand that experienced players have the advantage over me and that is the major intimidation factor for me. I was considering trying out for Offensive or Defensive Line. Another thing I am worried about is being familiar with the standard formations in football. Any recommendations? Thanks again

Answer
Jason, Good Morning.  Regardless if you seek to play on the O-Line or D-Line, you may want to go talk with any of the Head Coaches or his staff of any local high schools.  People at the YMCA can probably get you hooked up with those who Coach.  You can contact the City and County Recreational Departments.  I am a high school football Official, so contact the local Football Officals Association.  All of them have a wealth of knowledge to share.

Go to Half.com and buy used football books for $3,$5,$8 each.  to to websites like NCAA / D-1Football / ESPN and google Football Plays.  You will be amazed at your find.

The biggest thing is to learn the position, the play and the correct team to try out for, and keep your Attitude strong.  Do they need an inexperienced player?  Will your older age prove to be an anchor for the younger fellas when they get pressured?  Can your Leadership make up for your lack of experience?  I coach a men's baseball team, ages 25 and over.  Most have college experience but we won 2 straight Championships, slipped to Third Place this year, and already are planning to take the crown back next year.
Our season starts April 1 and ends in September.  Our average age is 34.  The guys have to battle injury and the age question, but we have the attitude as the classiest team in the League of 8 teams.  We have the best winning percentage for 3 years but didn't get the Trophy this year, so we are Reloading and Refocusing.  So, get busy with your Motivation!

Go with Confidence, but be Prepared,
