Question
hello, im thought about playing football in the us because it looks like hell fun and good times. The thing is i live in Australia and have never played the game. Can you tell me around the quality of college ball and what i have to do to be able to play. my physique isnt amazing, im 170cm , which is around 5,7, and 90kg, which is around 200pounds i think. my sporting experience consists of playing rugby league and rugby union all my life. i was good at the game when i was around 15ish, i used to make the representative teams and played at a u18s level when i was just 15.But over the years( i have 1 year left of high school) i have fallen away from the elite side of my game and injury didnt help. So, my question is, is it ludicrous to think about playing college football, and how would i do it. i hope you answer my question and thank you for reading through this

Answer
James, hello!

The mental and physical skills you have developed in Rugby would make you an awesome Footballer in America, so come on over!!

If you can get near any American Military Bases, you will find Recreational Leagues for you to join.  That's where you will discover which position you are best suited for.  Your size implies that you would be a solid running back that can carry the ball up the middle, but I do not know your speed.  At a 5"7" frame, most of the defenders would be able to outjump and outreach you on passes your way.

You may consider the Special Teams unit that runs downfield to tackle the ball carrier on kickoffs amd punts.  If you have a strong leg, you may consider being a place kicker for Field Goals.

Likely on the Offensive Line and Defensive Line, your size could prohibit you from being in the pits (like men that wear jersey numbers 50-79 on the Offense.

James, on the positive side........... You need to pursue it further until you determine if you can compete.  The toughness you've developed in Rugby would get the attention of many football coaches.  Talk to any Aussies that have traveled, particularly those that have served in Iraq.  They can likely put you in touch with their American counterparts that they served with, and can advise about contacts.

Wish you the best!  Keep me posted if you get to the team!!
