Expert: Thom Brooks - 12/14/2007
QuestionI was wondering how hard is it for me to walk on to a college football team? i've played hockey for 10 years and i would of started playing football in 9th grade but my schedule consisted of hockey too much. i'm intrested in playing WR or CB. i'm 18, 205 pounds, 5'11, and run the 40 in 4.64. i'm built and have very little fat on me. I'm currently intrested in Utah state or Utah university. what do you think i should do and what should i work on to get better? Also how does the walk on process work? Do i need to send a letter or contact the coach? Thanks for your help!
AnswerTim, hello!
It will be very difficult to walk on and take the job of a man that has 4 years or more of football experience. However, you've played a tough Hockey game for 10 years and without doubt, developed skills and finesse. Your size and speed is good. If you contact either university for their schedules and tryout dates, they will likely give you an interview. Their coaches and scouts are beating the bushes this month, looking for new blood!
I cannot advise on your best postion but they will. You may be suited for RB, DB, or WR but if you get with local players and coaches, they will work out with you to determine where you may be best suited.
I wish you the very best! I went through an Army Officers School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma with a gentleman from Lewiston, Utah named Bruce Karren. He is one of the finest quality people you would ever meet. He and his wife graduated from Utah State, so let me know if you make that team. I'll have to contact him to keep an eye on you!
Take care and Merry Christmas !!
