College Football/walk on at usf
Expert: Thom Brooks - 5/24/2007
QuestionThom,
I have a question about walking on to a football team. I've been in the military for four years and Im about to get out. I want to walk on to the usf football team. I made the pinellas county all star team in Florida in 2002 as a free safety. I was the leading tackler on my football team with two interceptions. I run the 40 in a low 4.5 I can bench press 225 16 times and i weigh 188lbs. I didnt get much help from my coach in high school so I want to try to make the team as a walk on. Do you think I have a chance or am i just wasting my time in your opinion.
AnswerJohn, Thanks for your service for our country!
John, you are in shape. With your past success it will not take long to get into football shape. USF would likely jump at the chance to give you a tryout. Contact their Athletic Department immeditately for the next available dates. Ol' Bobby Bowden at FSU might want to see your experience on the field, too. Georgia Southern in Statesboro has a new Coach, Hatcher, from Valdosta State. He brings a sterling record and GSU has 6 National Championships in Div. 1-AA. You would be welcome to talk scholarship with them.
If you get any stonewall, mail them a video of any past efforts.
A football coach that has a chance for a Gamer AND former military experience would be wise to put that kind of Leadership on the field. You may bring a calm presence that cannot be measured by your size or ability.
Keep me posted when you join that team!
Have a Day!
