Expert: Sue Date: 9/2/2007 Subject: Apartment Living Sheltie
Question I am going to be in law school for the next three years and I live by myself in a two bedroom apartment - over 1000 square feet. I do not work and with my schedule, I could be home on weekends and throughout the day between classes. Growing up, my family raised Border Collies as working dogs, but I have always wanted a Sheltie. I love the fact that they become like family and are very loyal, but I am a little worried about having to leave a sheltie alone in my apartment when I am in class. I know it is wise to try to find a puppy who seems laid back, but in general, how do shelties adapt to apartment living (given that you can let them out a couple/few times a day)? I really appreciate your response on this.
Thanks
Answer Hello Kristen,
I know several people living in apartments that have Shelties. As a matter of fact, all of them but one is away at work M-F. Yes Shelties are very adaptive to apartment living. I would suggest to try and get a pattern to feed and let the pup outside. I would also crate train the pup. When you are away, you can place the pup in the crate (as puppies will be puppies). The pup learns that is their "home" and you will find the pup will automatically go into the crate. Here is a site that will explain how to crate train your puppy. http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/lib-SpecTrain.htm#crate
I was in college while working full time with a Rough Collie while living in a 14 X 70 trailer! I simply patterned my times to be at home.
Best of success at Law School! I hope this has provided you with the information you were looking for. Should you desire additional information, please feel free to write again.
