Question
We just adopted a 5 week old Border Collie from a shelter. She will be a part of our family as a pet. How early can we start training her basic commands (sit, stay etc) then we like to advance her training (going after a ball etc.) but at what age would be appropriate?

Hello Alicia,
Congratulations on your new puppy!  You selected a very intelligent breed of dog and your training experience should be an enjoyment for both of you!
First, I would remember that the puppy is in new surroundings and will need an adjustment period.  However, learning house manners can be easily taught from the start by perhaps being perceptive as to the puppies behavior patterns and taking the puppy out immediately following meals and whenever possible between meals. During the time you are with the puppy you can be indirectly training the pup to voice commands by using the same tone and words every time you ask a task of the pup.  Do remember to praise the puppy when a task is completed correctly by the pup.
So to answer your question, now is a good time to begin the basics indirectly.  More advanced training could begin once  the pup has learned the basics.  Going after a ball, when made into a game and is fun, will come naturally for your pup.  Trust me, border collies have a natural instinct to get things and bring them back.  You may also find that the pup will develop herding tendencies...don't worry, that is natural.
