Question

Hey-

My Border/Catahoula mix will be 5months tomorrow. She has skin mites and the doctor put her on ivemectin. If she were to have a reaction, how quickly would it happen? I read online that it could happen and so I haven't given it to her for two days, after maybe 4 days of treatment before that. She had just been spayed and was just going through a horrible mess. I heard that stress can also play a part . . . she was wearing a crazy cone and just had an awful month, poor girl.

I want to say I trust our vet- they are great. I just read online that borders can react and it totally freaked me out. She seems well - frisky as usual and now the mange seems to be healing (after having been very red and bleeding before, all over her body). Her skin is a very pale pink now and the bloody spots are scabbing.

We bought a really good vaccuum and cleaned everything. Think she is on the up & up? Should I start back on the ivemec? The vet won't call me back - I'm a little upset.

Thanks!

Answer
Hello Again Kristin,
I answered your other question first and did not see this one!  Did your vet say what type of mite your pup had? Here is a website that will clarify what I am talking about when I ask you type...  http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/mites.html
I don't know what danger Ivermectin is to a collie mix.  I have purebred collies and will not give Ivermectin due to even the small amount of reactions that have been present in the breed...I see it as why take a chance.  Ivermectin is the first choice for treating mange mites so I can see why your vet has your pup on that.  You might try calling again and tell the Vet you are concerned over giving the Ivermectin and would like to know if there is anything else  you can use instead.  There may be no reason for concern in a mixed collie but I do not know.  At that point if no response is received, I would find a Vet that will work with you.
