Question
I have a 6 mo old catahoula that I have been feeding twice a day, at what point do I feed her once a day. She is very active and a true joy to be around

Answer
Hello Judi,
I have not been given what food your are feeding her, the amounts you are feeding, her observed weight level (underweight, good, overweight), activity level, etc. to give you very detailed information. It sound like you have a wonderful family member! Some dogs do quite well at that age with a once a day feeding, however; I usually recommend to switch at about 7-8 months as the dog is still a puppy and has higher energy level needs. I can tell you that moving your pup to a once a day feeding can best be assessed by you.  Look at your pups behavior, her overall look as being overweight or underweight, and her activity level. Remember that what you are feeding is as important as how many times a day you feed.
On the final day of an intense Animal Nutrition class our Professor told us this simple truth:  "If your dog is underweight then feed it more and if it is overweight feed it less."  This may seem crass, but I still hold to this simple truth.
In short, you can transition your pup to once a day feedings if her energy and nutrition needs are being fulfilled (as assessed by her overall look with slick shiny looking coat, good weight, hair that is pliable, and normal behavior and activity level for her is maintained).
I hope this is of help with the basic information I know about your pup. I like to share this excellent training website with puppy owners. Dr. P's website offers a wealth of information. Enjoy!
