Question
Hello - My son (adopted from Colombia) is 18 and heading to Brazil on a ticket NY Toronto Sao Paulo.  He has Colombian and US Passports.  Colombia citizens enter Brazil without a visa --US Citizens pay 130.00. However, Canada requires Colombians to have a visa. When arriving back to US GRU JFK
the US Passport would be needed. But if he enters Brazil on his Colombian passport - there wont be a visa in his US Passport when he returns.

Answer
Hi Blair,
No worries. Most U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. So he should use his U.S. passport to enter and exit Canada, use his Colombian passport to enter and exit Brazil. This is perfectly legal.
