Question
I need some guidance. Im a permanent resident and have decided to move to Colombia with my husband and children. My passport has expired and I've never had a cedula. What can i do? our trip is for December!! and what paperwork do i have to do for my children? thanks.

Answer
Hi Cindy,
I assume you are over the age of 25. If so, it is going to be impossible for you to obtain a passport before December of this year. You first have to apply for your cedula, with your birth certificate (recent notarized copy) and 3 pics, you go to your closest Consulate and apply for it. You will receive a temporary cedula, called a contrasena. Your permanent cedula would arrive about a year later. Colombian law says that those over the age of 25 who only have a contrasena can't obatin a passport, they can only get their passport once they have their actual permanent cedula. Once you have the cedula, you can apply for a passport and those of your children. You will need their birth certificate to prove kinship. If your husband is a U.S. citizen, you can start by applying for his Spouse Visa, while you get your cedula.
As a Colombian born returning to live in the country, you are allowed to bring your entire household items without paying taxes.
