Question
Hi. I am also a sixth grader doing a project on Columbia, South America, and I need to know what they do for fun, like having friends over or dances at schools.

Answer
Dear Ms. Joselyn:

First of all, please remember to spell it correctly: Colombian when referring to Colombia (the country) and Columbian when referring to Columbia, which is located in the United States. Similarly for the name of the place: Colombia for the country and Columbia for the District of Columbia in the United States.

In regards to your question I can say that Colombian kids are raised differently from one home to another depending on how strict the parents are, but kids are allowed to do what kids do: play. Kids would play soccer a lot (that is their favorite passtime). If not in a group they would ride a bicycle or do whatever else they have nearby like play at in a park where there might be some park games. Colombians of all ages are very friendly, so they would visit each other often. Many would have cellulars and would use them a lot, often to play games with them or to call friends to invite them to come over. Whatever they get a chance to do for fun they would probably do, which could be playing video games at an Internet cafe or at home if they have the gaming device, watch TV, play music in a stereo or in an MP3 player, etc. Kids often have a lot of friends and some that would be their closer friends. Parents are not too restrictive about having visitors coming over, but might tell them that it is time to do homework and therefore to stop playing.

Other sports such as baseball are less popular. Basketball and sometimes volleyball are more popular than baseball. If there is public pool around they would go there. Price of admission is very cheap. Some schools (not many) have a pool.

Schools have events sometimes that could include traditional / folkloric dances or theatrical presentations, whatever the teachers come up with. Parents would attend school events when invited.

Take care,
