Colombia/Renewing passport and cedula with Married name
Expert: MRZ - 5/12/2009
QuestionHi Marta,
I currently have a Colombian passport and cedula that are still valid. However I am now married and my last name has changed since I got them. We are currently looking into going on a cruise in the summer, but because I am not yet an American citizen I will need my passport to travel. My passport does not match my US resident card or Us license. I know can go to the Colombian Consulate here in Miami to get my passport and cedula, but I do not know how to change my last name. Do you know how long this will take approximately?
Thanks for your help,
Claudia V.
AnswerHi Claudia,
There are two ways to do this. One is the official way, it costs $364 dollars and it is done in the Consulate. It is called "Escritura Publica", you have to go to the Consulate, take your cedula and Colombian passport, take your marriage certificate, they will do it on the same day.
The other way, which is much easier and as far as I know free, is to go to the Consulate, take your cedula and Colombian passport, take your marriage certificate, and ask them to simply put a seal on your passport that says you were married, this seal will have your date of marriage and your husband's name.
I would try the second first without you telling them you know the other option, that way you will not have to pay anything.
Let me know if you any other questions.
