Colombia/Citizenship of adopted Colombian children

Question
My wife and I are American citizens. My son was born in Bogota and adopted by us when he was 5 weeks old. He was naturalized in the US when he was an infant, and now is a US citizen with US passport. We want to take a trip to Colombia. On the US State Department web site, is a statement that "U.S. citizens born in Colombia or who otherwise have Colombian citizenship will need both a Colombian passport and a U.S. passport for the trip." Is this true? Does my son need a Colombian passport to visit Colombia?

Answer
Hi Randy,
There is a fairly new law that demands that all Colombian born folks must identify themselves with Colombian ID and passports while traveling in Colombia. However, this law is not being 100% enforced yet. We have had clients who are asked for the Colombian passports and others who are not.
Please email me directly at info@colombianpossibilities.com, I will be happy to send you a document that we use for our clients who find themselves in the same predicament as your son.
Thanks
Marta
