Subject: CEA test results

Question
I am a 72-year-old male in excellent health who is distrustful of "conventional" medicine.  Before I acquired that distrust I underwent heart bypass surgery and other procedures (surgery, scans, etc.) and took several prescription drugs for BP control, gout and cholesterol control.

I no longer take anything but the BP meds, and I have a complete blood study done twice a year (my son is a lab tech).  My most recent results were outstanding (TC 130, HDL 45, LDL 76, TG 173) except for my CEA.  Last October it was 4.1, some 33% above the upper reference "limit."  I was told not to worry.  In May it was 6.1, about a 50% increase.  I had a clean colonoscopy in April.  What would you do, if anything?

Answer
You MAY have just a lab. aberration, in which case there is no danger. But I can not be sure of that. I suggest that your CEA should be followed but that you also should do more colonoscopies AND PET-scans and  CT- and/or MRI scans in order to find any source of this.
