Question
My wife had surgery to remove a hamartoma of the rectum. Some of the gelotinous liquid spilled during surgery. Now she has been diagnosed with either mucinous adeno carcinoma or signet-ring cell carcinoma (it depends on the report that you read)they also said it could be peritoneal cancer. Her ca reading before chemo was 298 after 6 treatments it was 61.She has now stopped chemo. It has not spread to her internal organs or lymph nodes although they say she has some leasions on the liver (external). Also some on the peritonial lining with a small 1/2" tumor on the external lining of the colon. The doctors say it is slow growing. What is your opinion of this.

Answer
If she has a mucinous adenocarcinoma or a signet ring carcinoma (the difference is somewhat fuzzy - that is probably the cause of different reports) and it has spread to her liver (even its outside surface) and her peritoneal lining (= her inner abdominal lining) her situation is indeed grave with a probably bad prognosis. I suppose that you mean that her CEA level is now 61. That shows an improvement but certainly not a cure. A cure is in this situation improbable. If indeed it is a signet ring cancer it is probably rather aggressive. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you! If indeed her original tumor was a hamartoma it had no connection to this situation since that is a benign tumor. But that is only true if it really was a hamartoma.

Unfortunately yes! That is also true of an ovarian cancer even if it seems sensitive to chemo therapy!
