Colon Cancer/Should I be concerned?

Question
I am a 29 year old male, and I have had intermittent anal bleeding for nearly three years now. It is bright red blood, and usually lasts for one or two bowel movements, without any pain or straining associated with it (I often feel quite gassy and have a churning sensation, but usually only after an attack, when the bleeding has stopped). Months can go by without a repeat, but recently it seems to be getting more frequent, perhaps occuring once every four or five weeks.

I went to the doctor when it began, and he told me it was most likely piles or a fissure, to eat more fibre, and so on. I have recently been back and have received a referral, but it will take time for me to be seen, and I am concerned by what might be happening. Is there a likely cause, and what can I do in the meantime to minimise any problems?

Thank you.

Answer
The most likely explanation is what you have told me you were told - I do not KNOW though. But your description disturbed me. Did not your dr. examine you at all since he was just talking about "likely" explanations? Often you can see things with just a surface examination without any endoscopy. I suppose your referral is for a colonoscopy etc. Even though it is likely that it is not anything dangerous that you suffer from, make sure that you do go to that examination since we do not KNOW! Good luck!
